Surfing: A Grand Master

Surfing is a sport that not only disconnects and releases stress, but also teaches.

We all have that little piece of heaven where we can forget about everything and disconnect from the world to become absorbed and charge our batteries.

Surfing not only brings that pleasant benefit of isolating ourselves from all the problems that surround us, making sure that for an instant, there is no worry that spoils that idyllic moment on top of a wave.

It also teaches certain things that can be useful in your day to day life and that will surely help you. Things, which are often learned in a personal way through your own experiences in the water.

Surfing is a sport that involves great physical and mental challenges for a person.  Many obstacles must be faced and overcome in order to evolve and improve your surfing.

Overcoming them is the objective and along the way you will learn things that surfing will bring to you:

  • If you have a good opportunity, go for it

This is something that is the order of the day in surfing. Either you move or you get eaten by crabs. If you have a good opportunity to catch what is possibly the afternoon wave, don’t hesitate for a second to go for it. The same thing happens in any everyday circumstance. If a unique opportunity crosses your path, give it your all to get what you really want. With effort and passion everything comes.

  • Believing in yourself, that will make the difference

What you think you can or cannot do, is what you will later be able (or not) to do. If you’re going to catch waves thinking that it won’t be a good day’s surfing, the result will probably be the expected one. If you are learning, this point will be vital for your learning.

Our lack of credibility in ourselves, as a rule, conditions our attitude to any situation.

Go into the water confident and believing in your abilities. If you do this, you will have a long way to go.

  • Practice, practice, practice

Trusting yourself will be a very important factor in your learning, but just as important will be how often you practice it.

Practice will be responsible for not having to worry about things you already do mechanically because of repetition. This will give you the opportunity to focus on new things and continue to evolve.

Whether you’re surfing or anything else, it’s clear that the more you practice, the better you’ll get.

  • Commitment

In surfing, this point can be seen quite graphically, when someone rides a wave in a very indecisive way and with little security. Do you already know what the result is? Yes, a complete turnaround.

In everyday life, the direct consequences of not fully committing ourselves to what we do are not so instantly appreciated. Nevertheless, if we don’t commit ourselves and put all our energy into the things we want to achieve, we are buying all the ballots so that the result is the same; a complete turnaround.

  • Celebrate the success of others

It is very common to be in the water and see someone performing a stratospheric aerial or tubing in a beautiful tube, and to hear in the background cries of euphoria for such an achievement. It doesn’t even matter if you know it or not… That woooow! scream comes out of the depths, while you feel almost the same adrenaline as the one running the wave.

In the same way it should be in our daily life. Congratulate and celebrate the achievements of others!

  • Eliminate your fears

Surfing is a sport that has to deal with high doses of fear. Fear can be determined by various causes: Fear of the size of the waves, fear of getting hurt, fear of drowning…

Regardless of your level, in surfing you can find yourself in many circumstances where you would have preferred not to go into the water. But if there is one thing that surfing really teaches you, it is that if you really want to improve and evolve in your surfing, you must face and overcome your fears. Obviously in a coherent and gradual way.

Kelly Slater: “Feeling fear is good. Some fears protect you from putting yourself in a harmful situation and can range from a physical fear to an emotional fear. Sometimes it holds you back from what you want to achieve, so it’s up to you to determine when it should hold you back and when it should push you further.”
