You will achieve more powerful manoeuvres and turns if you perform them as compressed as possible, bending over and bringing your knees together. This will give you the best balance for your next manoeuvre or faster change of direction.
Control the Timing
Many make the mistake of sliding straight down the wave to the flat when they take off in fast breaking waves. You’ll lose all speed and get “stuck” in the plane. You’ll find it very difficult to make a good bottom turn to move to the next section of the wave.
Once you stand up and do the Drop try not to lower the whole wall of the wave and do the bottom turn a little before you reach the end. If you do this, you’ll get much more speed and power. Also, you’ll be going more vertically into the wall of the wave, facing it to make the next turn more effectively.
Don’t forget to rotate your head as much as possible when you want to achieve a powerful and radical turn. Turn it just before the turn. Your upper body, your hips and therefore the board will follow the movement. You’ll see that this way your turns will be of higher quality and much tighter.
It is important that you always keep your eyes on the part of the wave where you will make your next turn or where you want to go. Look at the area of the turn and mark it well with your arms. Once you’ve done the bottom turn at the bottom of the wave, look at the top of the wave. In the same way, if you’ve already done the top turn, focus on the direction you want to go.
Don’t forget that in order to make a good turn you must know how to balance the weight on both legs depending on what moment of the turn you are in. For example, if we want to do a snap, we will support our weight strongly and give a powerful kick with our back foot. Then we will move all the weight to the front foot to continue with the wave.
