Other than your personal belongings, you should bring: Sun protection and sunblock for the face (you can use “zinc cream” for sensitive areas such as the nose, lips and cheeks); sunglasses and cap; beach towel; earplugs if you have sensitive hearing or have a hearing problem; swimming costume to wear underneath your wetsuit. The temperature drops at night in Lanzarote so we recommend bringing some kind of coat, in particular from November to mid-July.

¿What am I going to learn on these courses?

We offer different types of course based on the level of each student (Beginner, developing and advanced). We teach students about: in-depth safety rules, tides, currents, reading weather maps, surfing priority rules, different board models and which is the most appropriate for each student, stretching exercises for warming up the joints before getting in the water, the proper way to row whilst on the board, how to rest on the board while waiting for the next lot of waves, how to read the direction of the wave, how to turn left and right, how to acquire the perfect positioning, how to position the feet, how to brake and accelerate etc.

If you already have some experience of surfing, you will perfect your style with new techniques for each manoeuvre (takeoff, button turn, re-entry, cutback, floating, air moves, pipes…) and after correcting your techniques through photo and video analysis, you will quickly develop your ability.

What benefits will I get from this experience?

You will become completely self-sufficient on a surfboard, able to do this sport freely and confidently. You will receive a certificate for having done the course and photos of the activities. The physical exercise and contact with nature will also improve your health and wellbeing and you will get a suntan and make loads of new friends. You will be eager to travel after this experience and will have the perfect excuse of catching some waves. This may even change your life: you may become the protagonist of your own perfect story, living out your lifelong dreams.

Should I be afraid, embarrassed or worried about anything?

On the contrary, you should be excited the time you’re going to get to yourself! 80% of the students here are learners. Even if you don’t know anything about surfing, don’t worry. The basics are taught with the water at waist level on a sandy beach. Just make sure you communiate this to to your instructor when you arrive at the school, so that they are fully aware. You should feel special, getting the opportunity to live out one of your dreams. Or you can just carry on dreaming…it’s up to you!!

I am a girl and I'm travelling alone. I'm worried about whether this sport is for me and whether I'll be alright at the surfhouse.

If you are a girl and you’re unsure of whether this sport is for you, you will be surprised at the large number of girls that do this sport or that sign up for our beginners surfing lessons every week. In fact, according to our statistics, we have almost the same number of girls as boys registered to our camps. You should also keep in mind that as many people come to our camps with friends or partners as come on their own.

At the surf house, there are separate bedrooms for girls and boys. If you are coming by yourself, we can assure you that you will leave camp with a whole host of new friends. It’s very easy to make friends here as, above all, all the people you share the surfhouse with are the same people you will do the lessons with. They have chosen the same way to spend their holidays as you have, so you already have something in common with them!

Should I be physically fit?

This is not essential although it is always recommended. Sport and health are intrinsically linked and it can never do any harm to be in good shape. Beginners surfing is very fun and easy if you are in good hands. The course is extremely manageable: the day usually starts at 10 and finishes at 15. It includes stretching, theory, practise in the water and two 2 hour sessions every day. There will be an hour’s break to regather your strength, eat some delicious sandwiches, sunbathe on the hot sand, have a laugh with your friends and relax.

Is this sport dangerous?

Surfing isn’t dangerous and you will have special equipment for beginners surfing to avoid any potential injuries. The instructors are trained lifeguards, the beach is soft sand and all participants will be covered by our accident and public liability insurance. The most dangerous aspect of surfing is not the sea but when people are not aware or attempt things they’ve not been trained for. You should never be afraid of the sea but should have great respect for it. When learning this sport, it’s always best to stick to the fundamental rules.

How many hours a day will I be in the water?

The classes last 5 hours every day but you will be in the water around 3 and a half hours. We will do some theory lessons, reiterating the rules to beginners, a quick warm-up of the joints before getting in the water and at 12.30, we will have a break of around 45 minutes to have lunch, and then head back into the water.
